A date has been set for the trial of New Zealander Glenn McNeill, who is charged with the murder of Janelle Patton on Norfolk Island in 2002.
Mr McNeill, 28, has elected to be tried by a jury.
Janelle Patton’s body was found in March 2002 at a picnic spot on the island. She had suffered 64 separate injuries, including a stab wound to the chest.
The four-week trial will start on February 1 next year and will be held in the Norfolk Island Supreme Court before the island’s chief justice, Mark Weinberg, who is also a federal court judge in Australia.
Mr McNeill is in custody in a Sydney jail.
NORFOLK Island’s 1800 residents will be able to use mobile phones by the end of the year after construction of what is being promoted as the smallest digital mobile network in the world. Ericsson recently built the world’s largest 3G wireless network for Telstra, but will now build an older 2G network on the island, which is about eight kilometres long and five kilometres wide. The network, which will include four base stations, will enable Norfolk Island Telecom to provide residents with voice calls, SMS and voicemail.

And a High Tea Concert will present favourite songs from the British Isles and the South Pacific, marking Norfolk’s history as home to descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives. Highlight will be a Masked Grand Finale, in which performers and the audience will don masks to set the scene for such immortal Viennese operetta music as Vilia, My Hero, The Merry Widow Waltz, Girls Were Made to Love and Kiss and My Heart and I.
